Nobody seems to know who created this celebratory day - when it first began or why they chose July to observe it since apples are typically associated with fall and winter, but it is an annual event.
Turnovers and hand pies are filled pastries that are easy to carry and delicious to eat. Made with a pie or puff crust, they can be sweet or savory, baked or fried, topped or not. Hand pies have been around for centuries. Initially called portable pies, they were usually filled with apples, a filling that still tops the favorites list.
